Apple is ramping up its efforts in artificial intelligence (AI) after initially lagging behind competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT.

CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple has been working on generative AI technology for years but acknowledges that they were caught off guard by the AI trend in the industry.

Apple has developed its own large language model called Ajax and an internal chatbot named "Apple GPT" to test its functionality. Senior vice presidents John Giannandrea and Craig Federighi are leading the AI push, with plans to spend approximately $1 billion per year on the project.

Apple's efforts include revamping Siri with smarter AI, integrating generative AI into iOS, and exploring its use in development tools like Xcode to help app developers. They are also examining how generative AI can enhance Apple Music, productivity apps, and customer service apps within AppleCare.

With AI expected to play a crucial role in computing in the coming decades, Apple is determined not to be left behind in this technological frontier.

The AI Safety Summit led by Rishi Sunak is expected to host top Silicon Valley executives, including CEOs from major AI labs like ChatGPT maker OpenAI, Google Deepmind, and Anthropic.

Elon Musk's xAI startup and other AI companies' leaders will also attend, while policy chiefs from Meta and Microsoft are expected.

The event aims to secure endorsements from these leaders for AI model safety and responsible development. The attendees will discuss AI's potential risks, including election interference.

Although it won't create new AI regulations or laws, the summit may lay the groundwork for future regulations, with the UK aiming to play a leading role in AI research and development.
