Was ChatGPT a Conspiracy Theorist?

Amidst the escalating pandemic in 2020, researchers at California's Middlebury Institute studied GPT-3's response to right-wing extremist narratives like QAnon. GPT-3's quick production of troubling answers prompted OpenAI to refine its chatbot, ChatGPT, aiming to address misinformation more effectively. OpenAI employed a diverse dataset and external fact-checkers to enhance ChatGPT's reliability and safety.

Handling disinformation is complex due to the challenge of distinguishing between genuine information and conspiracy theories, some of which have turned out to be true, creating a delicate line to tread. OpenAI acknowledges that, while maintaining accuracy, they also want to avoid becoming arbiters of truth. Their evolving approach encompasses training models using supervised and unsupervised learning techniques, along with human reviews, but the challenge persists in curbing misinformation effectively.

In summary: GPT-3 appeared to give a lot of its opinions based on text from unverified forums like Reddit prior to being ‘trained’ by OpenAIs moderation model called InstructGPT- which in itself used human fact checkers.

All seems much safer now 😅

Schools in the US now teaching ChatGPT

Initially, universities in the US sought to ban AI tools like ChatGPT due to concerns over cheating and potential inaccuracies. However, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Lance Eaton, an administrator at College Unbound, compiled a list of generative AI policies, which originally focused on banning such tools. Now, the list showcases universities that are encouraging and teaching students how to use AI tools effectively.

Experts believe that ignoring AI's role in education would leave students ill-prepared for the evolving workforce. ChatGPT and similar tools have gained traction, being used to create essays, stories, and even song lyrics. While concerns linger about cheating and misinformation, educators are recognizing AI's transformative potential across industries.
