Minor changes to ChatGPT kills a bunch of startups

OpenAI's latest update to ChatGPT, allowing it to analyze PDFs, might just have sent some AI startups into a mild panic. You see, some startups have hitched their wagons to ChatGPT, offering services that leverage its capabilities, effectively "wrapping" themselves around it.

Now, with ChatGPT itself handling PDFs, these startups might be wondering if they've suddenly become as useful as a chocolate teapot in a heatwave. The move is like telling a kid they can have their cake and eat it too, leaving other startups with nothing but the crumbs.

One such wrapper startup, Jasper AI, once valued at a juicy $1.5 billion, created an "AI copilot" by wrapping around OpenAI's GPT model for enterprise marketing teams. But recently, it seems to have hit some turbulence, including layoffs and a slashed valuation.

This situation raises a thought-provoking question: without a unique selling point, are these startups destined to be overshadowed by the very technology they depend on?

Investors may want to start reevaluating their bets, or at least make sure those startups have some serious moat-building plans in their future strategy meetings.

‘Artificial Flavors’ at 59E59 Theaters explores the limits of A.I. creativity through a live demonstration.

Steve Cosson, the writer and director, takes on the role of narrator in this exploration of A.I.'s creative capabilities and limitations. Audience members provide input similar to Mad Libs to prompt generative A.I., which produces unconvincing art and writing.

The performance includes A.I.-generated skits performed by actors and culminates in a brand-new musical with text from ChatGPT and melodies composed on the spot. However, the A.I.-generated content throughout the show suggests that the resulting musical will be subpar.

While the experiment showcases A.I.'s potential, it becomes tiresome and lacks humor. Cosson attributes the artistic failure to A.I., highlighting the need for an artist's subjectivity. Despite the ingenuity in the parameters fed into ChatGPT, the production falls short of its creative ambitions.
